Jean-Marc Vacheron took on his first apprentice in Geneva in 1755, and the house has been making watches without interruption ever since — the longest unbroken run in the industry. The second name arrives in 1819, when François Constantin joined and wrote the line the company still quotes: do better if possible, and that is always possible.
Vacheron's reputation is for restraint. It makes the same complications as its rivals, to the same Geneva Seal standard, but tends to put them in cases that do not announce themselves. The Patrimony is close to a bare circle; the Historiques line reissues the oddities of the archive rather than the greatest hits.
It belongs to Richemont today, which has left it conspicuously alone.

Before you buy one
Vacheron trades at a discount to Patek on the secondary market for watches of comparable finish, which is either an opportunity or a warning depending on whether you intend to sell.
The Geneva Seal is stamped on the movement — ask to see it. The Overseas has an interchangeable bracelet-and-strap system; confirm all the parts are in the box, because they are expensive to replace singly.
